In a city known for grit, resilience, and innovation, one entrepreneur has turned personal hardship into a story of triumph and luxury. Emir Horton, founder and CEO of Eartha by Emir, is making waves in the fashion and lifestyle industry as one of the few — and possibly the only — Black men from Philadelphia to establish a luxury timepiece house from the ground up.

🔹 A Seed Planted Early

Emir’s journey with timepieces began long before his days as an entrepreneur. “When I was a teenager, my mother said to me, ‘two things a man should always have are a wallet and a watch,’ as she gifted me my first timepiece.” That moment sparked his lifelong attraction to watches and a desire to one day build his own collection.

But dreams don’t unfold in straight lines. It wasn’t until Emir relocated from Philadelphia to Los Angeles in pursuit of a career in television that the vision for his brand began to crystallize. In LA, he faced significant economic hardship — even a period of homelessness — which forced him into moments of deep reflection about his future and how he was spending his most precious asset: time.

🔹 Adversity as a Turning Point

Horton recalls one of those defining moments: “It wasn’t until I gained stability in my housing where I then reflected when I was sitting on that curb and I said, ‘You know, I need to be a better manager of my time.’ And that meant that I could no longer solely depend on this one stream of income coming from Hollywood because I was paying my dues and all those things. So I said, ‘What can I do to support myself? What can I build?’”

That reflection set the stage for a bold pivot into entrepreneurship — a decision rooted in the lessons his mother had planted years earlier. “A man should always have a wallet and a watch,” Horton recites.

🔹 Building Eartha by Emir

When the COVID-19 pandemic struck in 2020, Horton used the disruption as an opportunity to reinvent himself. He turned to the internet, teaching himself the business skills he needed to found Eartha by Emir in September 2020, right in the middle of nationwide lockdowns.

From watching YouTube tutorials on design and branding to researching manufacturing processes, Horton singlehandedly built his knowledge base and chased down the resources needed to launch a luxury timepiece brand.

Known today as the youngest Black founder and CEO in the meticulous industry of luxury watches, Horton stands out for his exceptional craftsmanship, design, and attention to detail. Through sheer determination and an astute grasp of time’s significance, he birthed Eartha by Emir — a brand that symbolizes not only exquisite timepieces but also a testament to breaking barriers.

🔹 The Brand: A Testament to Resilience

Eartha by Emir is more than a watch line. It’s a philosophy. Each timepiece is crafted to empower busy professionals to cherish time as their most luxurious asset — an asset to conquer any mission.

Seen on platforms including Fox 29, the brand is quickly gaining recognition in the luxury market. Horton’s growing visibility reflects not only the quality of his watches but also the power of his story to resonate with others who have faced adversity.

🔹 Representation in Luxury

The luxury watch industry has long been dominated by European houses and lacks diversity in its leadership and ownership. Horton’s rise as a young Black entrepreneur from Philadelphia offers a powerful counter-narrative of representation and possibility.

By building his brand from the ground up during one of the most uncertain times in modern history, Horton has proven that innovation and perseverance can disrupt even the most exclusive industries.

🔹 Looking Ahead

For Horton, the mission goes beyond fashion. Eartha by Emir is rooted in purpose: to inspire others, especially those who have faced hardship, to believe that new beginnings are possible.

“I reclaimed my time by building a brand,” Horton says. “Now I want others to see that they can reclaim theirs, too.”

As Eartha by Emir continues to expand, Horton’s journey stands as proof that resilience, vision, and cultural pride can create something timeless.

✨ From his mother’s first gift of a watch, to sitting homeless on a Los Angeles curb, to founding a luxury brand during a global pandemic — Emir Horton’s story proves that time, above all, is the most powerful luxury of all.
